I was taken to the Teldeniya Police Station and five to ten police constables started beating me with their hands and feet and I was beaten severely in front of my mother. I suffered burns on my legs and had wounds all over my body. The policemen then tortured me the whole night inside the Police Station”.

The official web site of the Movement for People’s Struggle was also launched at the rally. The inaugural rally was started with two minutes silence for the heroes in all over the world who sacrificed their lives for the rights of people. Number of representatives from different countries of the world participated at this rally with their greetings.  Comrade Chameera Koswatta welcomed the crowd. Comrade Pubudu Jayagoda addressed the rally exlaining the vision and mission of the movement. Para was also a writer and a founder of the Ilakkiya chanthippu. Afte he was forced to leave Sri Lanka and seek refuge in Germany, Para edited and published a socio-politic and literary magazine “Sinthanai”. Para was also an active member of the Movement for Racial Equality and Justice (MIRJE). Often Father Paul Caspersz and I visited Para, in order to assess the human rights violations committed following the repressive policies imposed by J.R.Jayawardene.

“Civil society members have to come together to protect their Rights but unfortunately in Sri Lanka the civil society is divided and therefore there is no common goal and the Srilnkan identity is lost” Dr. Deepika Udagama made this remark during her key note address at the Human Rights Award Ceremony 2011 and explained the role of the civil society in ensuring their Rights.
