Fearless faith guides us through our trials

Ever since the horror news of the accident that took place on the Puttalam-Colombo Road between Marawila and Negombo predawn hours Wednesday September 7 was reported, we were inundated with scores and scores of calls from various parts of the world. Our bishop, the Rt Rev Dr Daniel Thiagarajah was a passenger in the car that was involved in a strange accident; no other vehicles were involved in it.
He was seated on the rear left-hand seat. Seated on the front seat was Tharshana the housemaid returning from her holidays. Unlike for his trips, a new driver was hired for this on the recommendation of a friend of the bishop.

Channel 4′s Sri Lanka documentary cleared by Ofcom

Channel 4′s controversial documentary Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields, which featured graphic footage of alleged war crimes, has been cleared of breaching the broadcasting code. Ofcom said images featured in the documentary, broadcast in June, “whilst brutal and shocking”, did not exceed what the Channel 4 audience would have expected, given the pre-transmission warning about the nature of the content and the programme’s scheduling at 11.05pm, well after the 9pm watershed.

Common Justice in the Commonwealth – in Sydney,

The declaration of Commonwealth principles believes in the liberty of the individual, in equal rights for all citizens regardless of race, colour, creed or political belief, and in their inalienable right to participate by means of free and democratic political processes in framing the society in which they live. It recognises racial prejudice as a dangerous sickness threatening the healthy development of the human race and racial discrimination as an unmitigated evil of society and demands each member nation to vigorously combat this evil within their own nation. It further claims to oppose all forms of colonial domination and racial oppression and committed to the principles of human dignity and equality.

National Reconciliation, Transitional Justice, Rights and Accountability in Sri Lanka

Good Afternoon; Esteemed and Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen; Dear friends

Thank you for inviting me to share with you my thoughts on reconciliation.  I will not devote much time here, to describe the history of the conflict or the background situation in Sri Lanka.  The physical and emotional pain that has been handed down through generations in Sri Lanka during the last five decades has mainly been the inevitable outcomes of past policies followed by the successive governments, based on discrimination and social exclusion. The players, particularly parties to the conflict, have continued their unceasing confrontational politics. The current landscape in Sri Lanka and within the diaspora bears testimony to this situation.
