The second training program on Testimonial therapy was held at Galaha Retreat House from the 17th to the 23rd of July 2011 organized by the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) – Hong Kong, Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims (RCT) – Denmark and Human Rights Office Kandy the local organizer.The training workshop was facilitated by Inger Agger of RCT Denmark along with Shyamali Puvimanasinghe as the co- facilitator. There were 20 participants for the training workshop and most of them were new to the testimony therapy except those from H.R.O and Jansansadaya.
Emergency Regulations and Local Government Elections
CPA notes the decision of the Elections Commissioner to hold elections in October to twenty-three local authorities, after elections to these authorities were effectively postponed for more than a year through the use of Emergency Regulations. Two years after defeating the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and eliminating it as a military entity, Sri Lanka is still struggling to emerge from the woods on some important fronts. Two issues are predominant. One is the nature of the peace, and the efforts by the Sri Lankan government towards a political reconciliation between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil minority. The military victory over the LTTE, and President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s strength in parliament, gave the government an unprecedented opportunity to put in place a progressive political framework to heal the wounds of a 30-year war, and address Tamil grievances that predate the war
The news reports are as bewildering as they are increasing in number, especially from the East. People are being killed, for no apparent reason. ‘Grease devils’ have been arrested, vigilante justice has been meted out (ironically leading to more deaths), curfews imposed, the STF is on the look out, but the mass panic persists. Well-known columnists have flagged these incidents as ‘an unbelievable collapse of confidence in law enforcement‘. Mainstream newspapers last Sunday covered this disturbing story (What the devil is going on?, The Grease Yaka Sightings: Fact Vs. Myth), but there’s generally confusion amongst the public that is fuelling anxiety and fear.

The National Trade Union Center (NTUC) has organzied a unique poster campaign today (8) demanding a Rs. 10,000 salary increase for the working masses.
The NTUC has organized the poster campaign on a human wall as a mark of protest against the removal of posters demanding a salary increase by the police. The poster campaign on a human wall is to also protest against the threat to freedom of expression.A Spokesperson for NTUC said the poster campaign on a human wall will be held at 12 noon today at the Borella junction.
