Journalist arrested and severely tortured by Panadura Police

Mr. Niroshan Premaratne, a professional journalist attached to the Independent Television Networks (ITN) of Wickremasinghe Pura, Battaramulla was subject to arbitrary assault by two police officers at the Panadura Police Station on 8 May 2011. In the morning Niroshan had gone to participate at a family event at Wadduwa with his wife and his brother-in-law following which they travelled back to Colombo in his vehicle. Some officers of the Motor Traffic Unit of the Panadura Division pulled him over on charges of driving his vehicle while disobeying Police orders.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC STATEMENT

The armed conflict in Sri Lanka had been over for less than ten days when on 27 May 2009 the UN Human Rights Council adopted a Resolution praising Sri Lankan Government efforts “to ensure the safety and security of all Sri Lankans and to bring permanent peace to the country,” while ignoring credible allegations that war crimes had been committed by both sides. It also ignored calls by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and non-governmental organizations for an international investigation into such allegations.

Wikileaks: Sri Lanka ‘rejected rebel surrender offer’

The Sri Lankan government rejected a surrender offer by Tamil Tiger rebels at the end of the war, reports released through the Wikileaks website say.
They say that Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa dismissed US pressure to allow a mediated surrender with the words “we’re beyond that now”. The leaked US cables suggest requests for the International Red Cross to go into the war zone were refused.

தமிழ் மக்களை இனியும் ஏமாற்றி காலத்தை தாழ்த்தி கொண்டிருக்காமல் அதிகார பகிர்வு தொடர்பில் பேச்சுக்களை நடத்தி தேசியப் பிரச்சினைக்கு தீர்வு காணப்பட வேண்டும் எனவும் அவர் சொன்னார். பாராளுமன்றத்தில் நேற்று நடைபெற்ற அவசரகாலச் சட்டத்தை மேலும் ஒரு மாதத்திற்கு நீடிப்பதற்கான பிரேரணை மீதான விவாதத்தில் கலந்து கொண்டு உரையாற்றியபோதே அவர் மேற்கண்டவாறு தெரிவித்தார். அங்கு அவர் தொடர்ந்து உரையாற்றுகையில், ஐ.நா. வின் நிபுணர் குழுவின் அறிக்கை, தருஸ்மன் அறிக்கை என பலகோணங்களில் விமர்சிக்கும் அரசாங்கம் அதை தற்போது திருட்டுத்தனமாக அமுல்படுத்தி வருகின்றது. அவசரகாலச் சட்டத்திலுள்ள ஒழுங்கு விதிகளை ஆரம்பித்துள்ளது. தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளவர்களை விடுவிக்கின்றது.
